Why ChatGPT brand monitoring is different from SEO
ChatGPT names brands from two pipelines at once: training-data recall (what the model already knew about you when it was trained) and live web search (what the OpenAI Responses API pulls in when web_search is enabled). A brand can appear in a ChatGPT answer with no live citation at all — the model just remembers it. That makes ChatGPT the slowest engine to reflect new content, and the engine where authoritative roundups and long-tail mentions compound the hardest.
It's also the lowest-citation engine of the four. Research on ChatGPT's answer patterns finds inline source citations in roughly 2 of 10 mentions — the rest are unattributed brand names embedded in the response.
