The Best SEO Tools for Agencies in 2026 (and What Each Costs per Client)
The SEO tool stack most agencies actually run in 2026: one suite, one crawler, one reporting layer, free Google data, and a way to see whether AI answers cite your clients. Real prices, what each is best at, and where each falls short.

Agencies don't buy one SEO tool. They run a stack, and the tool that matters most depends on what the agency sells: technical audits, links, content, local visibility, reporting, or now AI search. This list covers the seven tools that show up in most agency stacks in 2026, what each is genuinely best at, where each falls short, and what it costs once you have more than a handful of clients.
Prices were checked in September 2026 and are billed monthly unless noted. Vendors reshuffle plans often, so verify before you buy.
How to choose an SEO tool for an agency
Solo marketers compare features. Agencies should compare three other things:
- How the price scales with clients. Per-seat, per-project, per-domain and per-keyword limits decide what the tool costs at 20 clients, not the entry price.
- Whether a client can read the output. Anything you hand a client needs to make sense without a login and without an SEO translating it.
- Which question it answers. Rankings, links, crawl health and AI answers are four different questions. No tool answers all four well.
1. Semrush: best all-in-one suite for full-service agencies
Semrush covers keyword research, competitor gaps, site audits, position tracking and content tools in one account. The SEO plan is $139/month with 500 tracked keywords updated daily; the Semrush One tiers add AI visibility tracking at $199 (500 keywords), $299 (Pro+, 1,500) and $549 (Advanced, 5,000). Annual billing takes up to 17% off.
Best for: agencies that do a bit of everything and want one login.
Watch out for: extra users and domains cost more, and the AI Visibility Toolkit is a separate $99 per domain per month. For a full breakdown, see Semrush pricing.
2. Ahrefs: best for link-building and content agencies
Ahrefs has one of the largest backlink indexes, and Site Explorer is the fastest way to see why a competitor outranks a client. Lite is $129/month with 750 tracked keywords, Standard is $249 with 2,000, and Advanced is $449 with 5,000. Rank Tracker updates weekly by default; daily updates are a paid add-on.
Best for: link building, content gap work and competitive research.
Watch out for: extra users cost $40–$80/month each depending on the plan, and Brand Radar's full AI coverage is about $700/month on top. See Ahrefs pricing for the per-keyword math.
3. SE Ranking: best value suite
SE Ranking offers rank tracking, site audits, backlink data and reporting at a lower entry price than Semrush or Ahrefs, around $65/month billed monthly. Its price climbs with the number of tracked keywords and how often they are checked, so it rewards agencies that know their volumes.
Best for: smaller agencies that want a full suite without the premium price.
Watch out for: its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than the two leaders'.
4. AgencyAnalytics: best for client reporting
AgencyAnalytics is a reporting layer, not a research tool. It pulls data from Google Search Console, GA4, ad platforms and SEO tools into branded client dashboards and scheduled reports. Core is $20 per client per month billed annually; rank tracking is an add-on at $41.67/month per 500 keywords.
Best for: agencies whose clients want one monthly report across every channel.
Watch out for: it reports what other tools measure. You still need a suite for research.
5. Screaming Frog: best crawler for technical audits
Screaming Frog's SEO Spider crawls a site the way a search engine does and surfaces broken links, redirects, duplicate titles, canonicals and structured data errors. The licence is $279 per year per user, and the free version crawls up to 500 URLs.
Best for: technical audits and migrations.
Watch out for: it's a desktop tool for specialists, and the raw output needs translating before a client sees it.
6. Google Search Console and GA4: best free data per client
Every client should give you access to their Search Console and GA4 properties. They are free, first-party, and the only source of real clicks, impressions and conversions in the stack. Every other tool on this list estimates. To query both without two tabs per client, ask Claude or ChatGPT through a Google Analytics & Search Console MCP server; the best MCP servers for SEO covers the other options.
Best for: proving results with the client's own data.
Watch out for: Search Console only covers Google, and neither shows what AI assistants say about the client.
7. AuditAE: best for AI search visibility per client
Clients increasingly ask a question none of the tools above answer: when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews for a recommendation, does the answer name us, and who gets cited instead? AuditAE runs each client's buyer questions on all four engines, shows whether the client was mentioned or linked, lists the competitors and sources cited instead, and ranks the fixes.
For agencies it is built around a roster: import up to 50 client domains, audit them in one click, schedule them monthly, and send each client a report or a live portal with your agency's name and logo. Pricing is per check, by engine (5–12¢), so a 5-prompt audit on all four engines is $1.65 per client, with no seats and no per-domain fee. Rank tracking is 5¢ per keyword check with weekly refreshes. More detail on the agency workflow.
Best for: agencies adding AI search to their retainer, and pitching prospects with a free check.
Watch out for: it doesn't replace a suite for backlinks or large-site crawls, and fully unbranded reports aren't available yet; the portal and emails still carry a small AuditAE credit line.
A sample stack by agency size
| Agency | Research | Crawl | Reporting | AI search |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer, 1–5 clients | SE Ranking or Ahrefs Lite | Screaming Frog free | Search Console + GA4 | AuditAE |
| Small agency, 5–25 clients | Semrush SEO or Ahrefs Standard | Screaming Frog | AgencyAnalytics | AuditAE |
| Larger agency, 25+ clients | Semrush One Pro+/Advanced or Ahrefs Advanced | Screaming Frog | AgencyAnalytics | AuditAE |
The bottom line
Pick the research suite by what your agency sells: Semrush for breadth, Ahrefs for links, SE Ranking for value. If rank tracking is all you need, a dedicated tracker is cheaper: see the best SERP trackers, priced per keyword. Keep Screaming Frog for technical work and Search Console for proof. Then add the one layer the suites leave out: whether AI answers recommend your clients. You can check any prospect's AI visibility free with the form at the top of this post, without signing up.
FAQ
For most agencies it is Semrush or Ahrefs as the research suite, plus a reporting layer and a crawler. Semrush suits full-service agencies that want keyword research, audits and content tools in one place; Ahrefs suits link-building and content agencies. Add AuditAE if clients ask whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews recommend them, because the suites don't read those answers.
A typical small-agency stack runs a few hundred dollars a month: a suite at $129–$250, Screaming Frog at $279 a year, and client reporting at about $20 per client per month on AgencyAnalytics. AI-search checks on AuditAE add about $1.65 per client per month for a 5-prompt audit on four engines, or roughly $3.50 with the fix list.
Google Search Console and GA4 are free per client, and Screaming Frog's free version crawls up to 500 URLs. For paid tools, pay-per-use pricing is cheapest at small volumes: AuditAE charges per check with no seat or per-domain fee. For large keyword volumes, a flat-rate suite or tracker is cheaper per keyword.
AgencyAnalytics is built for it: branded dashboards and scheduled reports per client from $20 per client per month billed annually. Semrush and Ahrefs have reporting too, but it is secondary to their research tools. AuditAE sends each client a monthly AI-search report and offers a live client portal with your agency's name and logo.
Partly, and usually as a paid extra. Semrush sells an AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 per domain per month, and Ahrefs' Brand Radar all-platform coverage is about $700 a month. AuditAE is built around it: it runs each client's buyer questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and shows who was cited instead.
