I audited Yoast's AI visibility from a chat window. Here's what I found.
A live AuditAE run on Yoast across five prompts and four AI engines. Yoast was named in 19 of 20 answers but URL-cited in only 9 — and on 'best wordpress seo plugin', AIOSEO won the link credit on 2 of 4 engines.
Yoast SEO has been the default WordPress SEO plugin for over a decade. The green-bullet checklist every blogger has stared at. The plugin every freelancer installs before adding the second line of CSS. If you've published on WordPress, you've used it.
But the question that actually matters in 2026 isn't whether Yoast ranks on Google's blue links. It's whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews are citing Yoast when someone asks "what's the best WordPress SEO plugin?" — because that's increasingly where the click decision happens.
I was curious. I also didn't want to spend an afternoon juggling tabs across four AI engines, copy-pasting answers into a spreadsheet, and squinting at source lists.
So I asked AEBOT.
The setup — one chat, four engines, three minutes
AEBOT is AuditAE's chat agent. You tell it what to audit; it runs the engines and brings back the rollup. One prompt, four engines, results that arrive while you're still on the same chat thread.
The conversation looked like this:
Me: Run an AuditAE audit on Yoast. Five prompts: best wordpress seo plugin, yoast vs rank math, yoast seo review, how to do seo on wordpress in 2026, best wordpress plugins for AI search visibility. All four engines. Track Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, and All in One SEO as competitors.
AEBOT: Five prompts × four engines = 20 cells. About three minutes since every call hits a live engine. I'll summarize when it's done.
[three minutes later]
AEBOT: Done. URL-cited 9/20 (45%). Brand-mentioned 19/20 (95%). The 50-point gap is the interesting part — Yoast comes up in almost every answer, but the engines mostly source third parties instead of yoast.com.
That's the whole interaction. The data comes back as a table and we look at it together — here it is, the real report from this audit:

The results
The first thing you see when you look at the per-prompt rollup:
"best wordpress seo plugin" — URL-cited 0 of 4 engines.
Read that again.
The single most commercially valuable query in Yoast's category — the one that converts "I want a WordPress SEO plugin" intent into an actual install decision — and Yoast's own URL doesn't make it into the source list of any engine. Not ChatGPT. Not Perplexity. Not Gemini. Not Google AI Overviews.
Every engine names Yoast in its answer. None of them link to yoast.com.
Who do they link to instead?
- Perplexity → aioseo.com (a direct competitor's own site), then a couple of German SEO blogs
- ChatGPT → wordpress.org plugin directory pages
- Gemini → supporthost.com, zapier.com, icegram.com
- AI Overviews → reddit.com, zapier.com, aioseo.com
Three of the four engines are routing the click to a comparison blog or, in two cases, to AIOSEO's own domain. AIOSEO is competing with Yoast for the same WordPress install, and the engines are sending the link credit to AIOSEO when users ask the most generic version of the question. That's a brand-loss problem dressed up as a citation problem.
Here's the full per-prompt rollup from the audit:
| Prompt | URL-cited | Mentioned | What's going on |
|---|---|---|---|
| best wordpress seo plugin | 0/4 | 4/4 | The big leak. |
| yoast vs rank math | 4/4 | 4/4 | Yoast owns its own head-to-head. |
| yoast seo review | 3/4 | 4/4 | Branded reviews work — ChatGPT cites the WordPress.org listing instead. |
| how to do seo on wordpress in 2026 | 1/4 | 4/4 | Engines prefer third-party how-to blogs (several German ones). |
| best wordpress plugins for AI search visibility | 1/4 | 3/4 | Perplexity didn't even mention Yoast. ChatGPT cited Rank Math by name. |
Take a second on that bottom row. Best WordPress plugins for AI search visibility — a query that barely existed two years ago — and Perplexity returned an answer that didn't include Yoast at all. ChatGPT mentioned them but also cited rankmath.com directly as a recommendation. The AEO category is moving fast, and Yoast's brand authority from "regular SEO" isn't transferring automatically.
What this means for Yoast (and any plugin)
Three patterns in the data, and they generalize to anyone shipping a WordPress plugin in a competitive category.
1. Branded queries are safe. Generic queries are the leak.
Anything with "Yoast" in the prompt routes back to yoast.com somewhere. The reviews, the head-to-head comparisons — Yoast owns those. The problem is the unbranded discovery queries: "best X" and "how to do Y." Those route to listicles, Reddit, and competitor blogs. The engines need a third-party source to cite, and Yoast hasn't seeded those sources.
This is the share-of-voice gap. Yoast's brand IS the answer. The engines just keep handing the link credit to someone else.
2. AIOSEO is winning the AI-source layer.
Their own domain shows up in two engines' answers to "best wordpress seo plugin." Yoast's doesn't. That's not a content-quality problem — Yoast has more brand recognition than every competitor combined. It's a structured-content problem: AIOSEO has comparison pages and listicle bait at scale, Yoast leans on its brand. In an AI-cited world, the structured content wins because that's what the engines can extract from.
If you're sitting on the dominant brand in your category and a smaller competitor is showing up in AI source lists where you're not, the answer is almost always that they're publishing the comparison content you've been too proud to write.
3. The AEO category is up for grabs.
On "best wordpress plugins for AI search visibility," Perplexity returned an answer with zero Yoast mention. ChatGPT cited Rank Math directly. If you're a plugin that wants to own emerging categories — AI search, schema, structured data — you can't wait for the engines to find you. You have to ship content that says "we do this" before competitors say it first.
If I were running Yoast's content team this quarter, the playbook is concrete: a comparison hub at yoast.com/vs (Yoast vs Rank Math, vs AIOSEO, vs SEOPress); a "best WordPress SEO plugin in 2026" listicle-killer page that explicitly addresses the comparison criteria the engines extract; and three or four "Yoast + AI search" pieces to claim the AEO category before Rank Math gets there.
But you don't get that diagnosis from a dashboard. You get it from the data telling you that 0 of 4 engines cited Yoast's URL on the one query that matters most.
The bigger point
The audit took three minutes. The chat cost about 43 cents in underlying API calls. I never opened a browser. I never juggled tabs across four AI engines. I never copied results into a spreadsheet.
This is the part of AEO that nobody is automating yet, and it's the most expensive part. SEO agencies are spending hours each week running these prompts manually, screenshotting results, and tallying mentions in a Google Sheet. That workflow exists because the tools didn't.
AEBOT is what comes next. Run the audit from the chat. Get the rollup in the chat. Get the playbook ("publish a /vs hub, close the AEO gap, fix the listicle absence") in the chat. Email yourself the summary, save the report to Drive, schedule a weekly rerun — all from the same conversation.
The 12-tab afternoon is the same answer. It just costs you the afternoon.
If you want to see whether your brand has a 50-point share-of-voice gap waiting in your category, run a free audit on AuditAE. One prompt, four engines, no signup. First one's on us.
